How to Move Heavy Items

June 17, 2025

Moving heavy items can be one of the most daunting parts of any move. Whether it’s a large couch, a heavy dresser, or a bulky appliance, lifting and transporting these items requires careful planning and proper techniques to avoid injury and damage. At Express Moving, we’re here to provide you with some helpful tips for safely moving heavy items, so your move goes as smoothly as possible.

1. Plan Ahead and Clear the Path

Before you start lifting, take a moment to survey your space. Clear any obstacles that might get in the way, such as rugs, furniture, or loose cables. The more open the path, the easier it will be to move your heavy items.

2. Use Proper Lifting Techniques

Never underestimate the importance of good lifting posture. Use your legs, not your back, to lift heavy items. Keep your back straight, bend your knees, and squat down to grab the object, then lift by straightening your legs. This helps distribute the weight and prevents injury.

3. Enlist Help

Never try to move a heavy item on your own. Having an extra pair of hands makes a huge difference. Whether it’s a friend, family member, or professional movers, it’s always a good idea to have support when moving heavy objects.

4. Use Moving Straps or Furniture Dollies

For larger items like heavy furniture or appliances, moving straps and furniture dollies can save you a lot of strain. Straps allow you to distribute the weight evenly across your body, and a dolly makes it much easier to roll heavy items rather than lifting them.

  • Moving Straps: Place them around the item and your body to help lift and carry it with less effort.
  • Furniture Dollies: For bulky furniture, using a dolly will make moving easier by allowing you to roll rather than lift.

5. Disassemble When Possible

Breaking down large items into smaller pieces can make them much easier to move. For example, if you have a large bed frame, desk, or bookshelf, take it apart before moving it. This reduces the weight and size, making transportation a lot simpler.

6. Protect the Item and Surrounding Areas

Moving heavy items means the potential for scratches or dents on your furniture and floors. Be sure to protect your items by wrapping them in moving blankets or bubble wrap. Also, protect your walls and doorframes with corner protectors to avoid damage.

7. Lift With a Team for Large Items

For truly heavy or awkwardly shaped items, such as refrigerators, washing machines, or large dressers, it’s best to have at least two or three people lifting and guiding the item. Moving with a team ensures everyone can share the weight and help direct the item safely to its new spot.

8. Use the Right Equipment for the Job

If you’re dealing with especially heavy or bulky items, professional moving equipment might be necessary. At Express Moving, we have all the right tools to help move your heavy items safely, including:

  • Lifting straps for heavy furniture and boxes
  • Moving dollies for appliances and large items
  • Ramp access for heavy furniture or boxes going up or down stairs

9. Take Breaks and Stay Hydrated

Moving heavy objects is physically demanding, so be sure to take regular breaks to avoid exhaustion. Drink water to stay hydrated and rest to give your body the energy it needs to continue the move.

10. Leave It to the Professionals

If you’re feeling uncertain or simply don’t want to risk injury, Express Moving has a team of trained professionals ready to move your heavy items with the proper equipment and techniques.
